The work deliberately has no name.
And perhaps that is the point.
When someone asks, “What is the name of this sculpture?”, Zura’s answer is simple:
“What is the name of your girlfriend or boyfriend?”
The viewer is invited to give the work a name of their own choosing: to name it after someone they love, admire, remember, desire or simply find beautiful. The flower becomes a personal gesture, changing its meaning depending on who is looking at it.
Rather than prescribing a single identity or interpretation, Zura leaves the work open. It can become a lover, an admirer, a memory, a person from the past, someone in the present or even someone yet to be met.
The sculpture also reveals Zura’s interest in the process of making. Beginning with an armature and developing the form by hand in plaster, the work exposes the connection between structure, material, gesture and imagination.
Part playful, part intimate and part conceptual. Untitled turns the act of naming into part of the artwork itself. The Title is yours to give.
Presented as part of Anatomy of Sculpture, the work continues Zura’s exploration of form, material, perception and the relationship between the artist and viewer.
